Numerous paintings in the Veerabhadra temple display figures who dress in checkered cotton and show the prominence of the check pattern in traditional dress.įashion Check pattern as appearing on a dressĬheck and its variant patterns have been commonly employed as fabric and textile designs used in the making of garments. According to 17th Century trade records, the use of the check pattern in ornamentation became widespread across South India. South India Mural in Veerabhadra templeĬheckered stripes were prominent in textile designs around the Coromandel Coast in the 16th-17th Century. In the 1930s the checkerboard pattern was incorporated into the design of Scotland's police uniform which was later nicknamed Sillitoe tartan and adopted as a police symbol globally. Following the battle of Culloden, wearing check or tartan was banned through the Dress Act 1746 in an attempt to control Scottish clans who supported the Jacobite rising of 1745. The design was introduced by the Celts before it became a staple of highland dress. The pattern, in its tartan variation, is prominent in Scottish garment designs and gained notoriety from the 16th century onwards among Scottish Highlanders. Notable instances of its usage in England includes its appearance on the exterior of Hiorne Tower and above the windows in Westminster Hall. This design was popularly used across England and in nearby regions in parish churches and small houses following the 16th-century Reformation. Checkered exterior of Hiorn TowerĬheck appears in architecture as checkerwork (also chequer-work or diapering): a laying of bricks or tiles of two different materials or colours in an arrangement that, when finished, resembles the checkered pattern. The checkered garter snake, chequered skipper and cleridae, commonly known as checkered beetles exemplify natural occurrences of the pattern which have emerged without human interference or stimuli. Ĭheck may not have a single foundation specific to a practice, region or type of material because it appears within nature and thus can be imitated and adapted. The checkerboard pattern has also been identified in Bronze Age pottery and ancient Roman architecture. Check's variant tartan appears on the 3000-year-old mummy the Cherchen Man. Weavers have long produced checked patterns, but fashion trends and its level of ubiquitousness vary over time. This is illustrated by the comparative age of weaving which creates a checkered pattern as a byproduct of its process, as weaving is estimated to have originated in the neolithic period or approximately 10000 BC. Human uses for check predate its notable usage on the checkerboard in the board game chess, which was developed in its chaturanga iteration in the late 6th or early 7th century AD. Its design and incorporation by humans into pattern-making and weaving precedes its common etymological characterisation and derivation from the word shah in chess the language conventions from which the contemporary English word 'check' is extracted are younger than some appearances of the pattern or its variations. There are few known instances of its import into the regions and cultures in which it is featured. The incorporation of the checkerboard pattern in man-made objects has no definitive origin as the pattern has existed in assorted forms with multiple variations across continents and time periods. ![]() The word entered the French language as echec in the eleventh century, thence into English. It is more specifically derived from the expression shah mat, "the king is dead", which in modern chess parlance is referred to " check-mate". The word is derived from the ancient Persian word shah which means "king" in the Sasanian game of Shatranj an old form of chess which is played on a squared board of alternating coloured checkers. The pattern's all-pervasiveness and simple layout has lent to its practical usage in scientific experimentation and observation, optometry, technology (hardware and software), and as a symbol for responders to associate meaning with. ![]() Such is the case with check in ska and on the keffiyeh. The pattern is commonly placed onto garments and is, in certain social contexts, applied to clothing which is worn to signify cultural or political affiliations. The pattern typically contains two colours where a single checker (that is a single square within the check pattern) is surrounded on all four sides by a checker of a different colour. ![]() Check (also checker, Brit: chequer, or dicing) is a pattern of modified stripes consisting of crossed horizontal and vertical lines which form squares.

You can space two words, like normal, without the possibility of them being on separate lines. You know that already - but there’s still a couple of pitfalls to be aware of when using it. The word space is used to separate words and sentences. The word space is a character with an inherent conflict of interest: the space must be wide enough to separate individual words, but narrow enough to encourage grouping into sentences and paragraphs. It’s the most common whitespace character. The word space is the character you get when you press the space bar. Using them effectively can and help your writing seem more authoritative. While most of these characters do little but add some white space in very particular situations, it’s worth getting to know them a little. Online (particularly on social media) you’re often limited to the whitespace characters designated by Unicode. When designing a website or a document, you can use whitespace to distinguish important information. The more crowded a composition, the less weight is carried by each individual element. One common criticism of this website is that there’s too much “wasted space.” Web developers have a tendency to cram as much information on your screen as possible. The carbide-tipped spears were still sharp, and none of the bits had broken. We drilled all the test holes without adding drops of water because the bits were drilling so well dry, we didn’t feel water was needed.Īfter drilling 10 holes, we checked the bits for wear. We used masking tape on some of the tiles to further reduce the risk of wandering and prevent surface chipping, but we also drilled holes without the benefit of tape, and the Owl Tools bits excelled in both cases. We tested the Owl Tools bits on several types of tile, including marble, travertine stone, shale, glazed ceramic, and glass tiles. The shanks are made from steel and the bits boast carbide tips for added hardness. In our tests, this 10-piece set of masonry drill bits from Owl Tools demonstrated a high level of durability while the spear tips proved to reduce wandering (sliding across the surface of glazed tile before creating a hole). When folks have a variety of different tile materials to tackle, it can be difficult to pick the best drill-bit set. We finished by adding up the scores and using them to determine the best categories for each set of drill bits. After drilling an initial 10 holes with each bit, we inspected them for dulling and wear before drilling more holes. We did not judge the bits on how long it took to drill through a tile because different types of tile require longer drilling times, and it’s counterproductive to exert strong pressure while drilling as it can cause the bits to break. We looked for durability and relatively smooth-edged holes-it’s not unusual to have some slightly ragged edges, however. The better a drill bit performed, the higher the score. We scored each bit (or bit set) using a rubric throughout the hands-on testing process. Our goal was to determine how well the bits stood up to their intended drilling purposes. In short, we did not test a bit made for drilling ceramic or glass tiles on porcelain tiles, which are much harder. We tested the bits by drilling multiple holes, but we only tried them on tile types they were designed for. As the manufacturer suggested-or if a bit was struggling to drill through-we added a few drops of water while drilling to help keep the bit from getting too hot and breaking. It’s not always necessary, so we didn’t tape all the tiles-for example, the surface of a travertine tile is soft and porous, and most bits will not wander when drilling through travertine. We used masking tape on the tops of some tiles, which can help keep bits from wandering and reduce the risk of the tile chipping during the drilling process. All of the drill bits were tested using a standard cordless drill. Our actual testing process was straightforward. We considered the brand to an extent-DeWalt and Bosch are both top manufacturers of construction tools-but didn’t automatically eliminate drill bits from smaller or niche manufacturers if they featured carbide or diamond tips and were rated well by consumers. Over the years, we’ve had plenty of practice drilling tile, so our experience combined with in-depth product research was instrumental in selecting the drill bits for testing. ![]() Photo: Glenda Taylor How We Tested the Best Drill Bits for Tile
